Scripture: 1 John 4:7-16

In the world there are many types of love – parental love of our father and mother; the love between husband and wife; and love among friends. We often say that the greatest love is a mother love. Although we have so many types of love, yet the reality of life tells us that: love is limited, or even frustrating, and sometimes it is not reliable. Thus, in reality these are not the true love. So what is love? The Bible tells us that God is love. What the world lacks most and what it needs the most is love; because without love, the world is a ruthless and terrible place.

1.   What is love?

John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”  Romans 5:5:’God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.’ For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. And God loves everyone in the world, that He gives us His only Son in order that we may have eternal life.

When God gave us His Son, it is a big and major price that He had paid. It is unprecedented, and it is unparalleled of anything the world has seen. God’s son is Jesus Christ of Nazareth; He is unique; He is born into this world as a human being; He is both God and man. There is no greater gift from God that is bigger than this. No one else can do and achieve this. No one else in this world has such a great love for others. This is God’s "indescribable gift’ (2 Corinthians 9:15). ‘God did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?’ (Romans 8:32.)

2.    The expression of love

God is love. This is manifested by the cross of Jesus. Therefore, when Christ came, it manifested the love of God to mankind in history clearly and concretely. The love of God to us is agape love; it is a self-sacrificial love; and it is the willingness to pay the price for the good of others. In addition, God gave His Son to us, so that He will die in our place. This clearly demonstrated to us that God’s love is to redeem us from our sins (John 3:16). Jesus is to be Saviour of the world (14). Jesus is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29) [Reference: 1 John 3:5.]  His death (John 3:14-15, 11:49- 52, 12 24) is to help us to get life through what He has done (9). He sheds His blood (Rom 3:25), so that He became the sacrifice of atonement for our sins (3:10). When we speak of love, the other party must be an object worthy of love. But God loves sinners; they are unworthy of His love; they are people who are under the wrath of God. God loves us and He sent His Son to rescue us, it is not because of our own loveliness, but because He is love. How great is God’s love to us, He is willing to pay the price freely and completely to us unworthy people. (See: Romans 5:7-8). This clearly demonstrates the extent of God’s love to us.

3.    How do we enjoy love?

The apostle John said: ‘No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.' (1 John 4:12) We need to live in God. How do we enjoy love? We need to have faith and trust in God.  We need to accept Jesus as our personal Saviour. We need to live in God.  Then we can enjoy love. We must abide in Jesus Christ and have a daily relationship with Him.

4.   Live out God’s love
A person, who has truly lived out love in his daily life, must always have God the Father and other people in their thought and mind; he should not just think of himself. The first fruit of the Holy Spirit is love (Galatians 5:22); (1) Love God, (2) Love the brothers (3) Love everyone (4) Love our enemies. We need to follow the example of Jesus i.e. Jesus can love him who cannot be loved. God’s command is to love God and to love neighbours - both of them are to be one.

Some may say that the other person has defects – someone has this problem here and that problem there, then how can I love him?  True, but we need to look at other people's good points and less on his defects. Therefore, despite his shortcomings, we can still love him.

Some may see others without much education, wisdom, beauty, money and there is not anything that helps us to love him. But we should not only look at worldly possessions and materials, we should just ask whether that person is born again or not. If he is born again, he is the true children of God, we should then love him as our brother because Jesus loves him, we should love him too. We should have the same heart and the same mind as our Lord Jesus Christ. If the Lord loves him, how can we hate him?  ‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8)
